Recently, our team was asked a question: “How long can a student stay in the UK after completing their studies on a Student visa?”

We wanna share the answer from our specialists:

04.09.2025 14:29:11 On a UK Student visa, you are granted a short additional period after your course ends, but this is limited and depends on the course length. For courses lasting 12 months or more, you normally receive up to 4 extra months beyond the official course end date. For courses lasting between 6–12 months, you usually get 2 extra months. For courses shorter than 6 months, only 1 week to 1 month may be granted. This period is intended to allow you to prepare for departure, attend graduation, or switch into another visa category if eligible. Importantly, you cannot stay indefinitely — once the visa expires, you must leave the UK unless you have successfully applied for another visa. Many graduates apply for the Graduate visa, which allows up to 2 years (or 3 years for PhD holders) of post-study work. A lawyer can help you assess whether you qualify to switch to a Graduate visa or another immigration route to extend your stay lawfully.
